Ape Shifter - II (CD, Maximum Booking, Rock)
Whoa...this band is one big roaring wall of sound. If you love electric guitar like we do, this album has the potential to knock your socks all the way off. Although the band Ape Shifter is based in Germany, lead guitarist Jeff Aug is originally from the U.S. (born in Washington, D.C.). On the second Ape Shifter full-length release, Aug and his bandmates Kurty Munch (drums) and Florian Walter (bass) play like there's no tomorrow. These tracks have a furious intent that is sadly missing in much of the music made in the United States in 2019. These guys play super loud, but they're by no means a noise or thrash band. There's a huge amount of skill involved in playing loud rock that is as precise and complex as this. Interestingly, the bulk of the music here is instrumental. But if you think instrumental means boring, think again. These tracks are chock full of creativity and imagination. So much so that the music may make you feel as if you're floating in the clouds or...more appropriately...blasting off into space in a rocket ship. If loud rock's your thing, Ape Shifter might just push all of your buttons the way you like 'em to be pushed. Killer tracks include "Gravity," "Mask of the Ancient Warrior," "Fu Manchu," "8 Shot," and "Matilda." Loud intense stuff with balls.

Autogramm - What R U Waiting 4? (CD, Nevado Music, Pop)
Great cover art on this one. And it gives a good indication of the music itself. The guys in Vancouver's Autogramm write and record power pop that should immediately appeal to fans of classic acts from the past like The Cars, Split Enz, and Devo. Regular readers are well aware of how much we appreciate the direct and simple approach. Rather than overproduce and over arrange everything to death, these guys have the good sense to write smart simple tunes and then present them using only the most basic necessary ingredients. What R U Waiting 4? spins like a best of collection, even though it's an album of brand new songs. Autogramm is the trio comprised of Jiffy Marx (Hard Drugs, Blood Meridian), CC Voltage (Dysnea Boys, Loyalties, Black Halos, Spitfires), and The Silo (Black Mountain, Lightning Dust, Destroyer). All three guys know the value of using restraint when playing. Instead of overplaying, they keep the music sparse...allowing listeners to focus on the vocal melodies and cool rhythms. It'll be interesting to see how this album fares out there in the universe. Our guess is that these guys are providing a style of music that will be welcomed with open arms. These songs create a pure feelgood escapist universe that allows listeners to forget about all the stupid stuff going on in the world. Cool captivating tracks include "Jessica Don't Like Rock 'n' Roll," "Bummer Party," "Wandering Eyes," and "I Wanna Be Whipped."

Be-Bop Deluxe - Sunburst Finish: Deluxe Edition (Double CD, Esoteric Recordings / Cherry Red, Pop/rock)
Although he's one of the most talented musicians the world has ever known, Bill Nelson remains an underground icon in the United States. Considering the quality and quantity of work this man has released over the past several decades, it seems incredible that he has never had even one successful hit song in this country. When Nelson's band Be-Bop Deluxe originally hit, many discounted him as a David Bowie copycat/soundalike artist. True, there were similarities. But those similarities quickly diminished, revealing a truly original man with a truly original voice. That first became obvious on Be-Bop's Futurama album. But if there were any lingering doubts, Sunburst Finish blew them totally out of the universe. Widely regarded as the band's best album (although we would argue that Modern Music is just as mindblowing), Sunburst Finish solidified Nelson's career. In 2018 the fine folks at Esoteric Recordings and Cherry Red in the United Kingdom (where CDs are thriving, thank God) have reissued not one but two deluxe editions of this criminally overlooked album. We're covering the double CD version, but there is also a super deluxe version that features additional live tracks plus a blu-ray disc of the album mixed in surround sound. The double CD release features the original mix of the album (remastered, of course) and a second disc featuring an entirely new 2018 mix by legendary studio wizard Stephen W. Tayler. At the end of the second disc are six totally cool unreleased bonus tracks. For those who know and love the album, the new mix will offer a crisper more intricate overall sound that allows some things to be heard that weren't heard before. Although, fortunately, the mix stays rather closely to the original for the most part. For those who missed out on this album entirely, these two new releases will be an incredible introduction to one of the classic rock/pop albums that most folks completely overlooked. For Nelson's fans, the releases will offer new insight into this legendary album. Killer tracks include "Fair Exchange," "Ships In The Night," "Sleep That Burns," "Blazing Apostles," "Beauty Secrets," and "The Mystery Demo." We're hoping that deluxe releases of Modern Music will be coming soon. One day Bill Nelson will receive the universal recognition he deserves for being one of the most creative, prolific, and original musicians of all time...as well as one of the most talented. Highly recommended. Top pick.

Big Star - Live On WLIR (CD, Omnivore Recordings, Pop)
There was a time not that long ago that most Big Star fans felt that we had heard all there was to hear from this exceptionally influential pop band. But then a few years ago the folks at Omnivore Recordings took it upon themselves to unearth all the recordings they could find. And in the 2000s we have seen more Big Star releases than ever before, much to the delight of the continually growing list of people who cite the group as one of the greatest and most underrated pop bands of all time. These live tracks were recorded in 1974, direct to two-track tape for airplay on radio station WLIR. These recordings find the band in somewhat of a transitional mode. Chris Bell had recently left the band, and they had just released their second album (Radio City). Though the sound quality is a bit rough, these tracks find all three musicians in truly fine form. Alex Chilton, Jody Stephens, and John Lightman should have been playing for thousands and yet...most of the time they were playing for small audiences. And most folks in attendance probably weren't even that familiar with the group's material. There are some truly choice moments on this album. Perhaps the most riveting tracks are Chilton's solo acoustic renditions of "The Ballad of El Goodo," "Thirteen," and "I'm In Love With A Girl." Truly inspired stuff. If you're not familiar with Big Star, this would probably not be the best place to start. First get the band's three studio albums. Afterwards, like so many, you'll probably find yourself wanting every snippet of music that was recorded. Despite the sound quality on some of these tracks, Live On WLIR is an instant must-have for fans. Great packaging with cool photos. The booklet contains interesting liner notes by Robert Gordon and an interview with John Lightman by Rich Tupica (author of There Was A Light: The Cosmic History of Chris Bell and The Rise of Big Star). Over fifty minutes of historically significant material. YES.

Black Science - Worlds Within Worlds, Worlds Without End (Independently released CD, Progressive/psychedelic)
Ahhhhhhh....this one is certainly a refreshing change of pace from all the samey stuff littering the musical landscape in 2019. While others are trying to craft clever words and catchy melodies that will sell, the folks in Black Science are taking a more adventurous approach to making music. The strangely titled Worlds Within Worlds, Worlds Without End is an album that is bound to expand minds all over the world. As each and every year passes by, we find that we are more and more impressed by those who aren't trying to impress. And, likewise, we are less and less impressed by those who are trying way too hard. The compositions on this album are audio creations that just happen. You don't get the feeling a lot of preparation went into writing the songs, as the recording process was/is apparently just as important as the songs themselves. Effects and sound manipulation are an integral part of the overall sound and idea. While there are melodies floating around, they're drenched in echo and reverb to the point of making them sound like messages coming from outer space. Black Science is the solo project created by Thad McKraken. You won't see or hear anything about this fellow through mainstream media because it's too strange for those kinds of outlets. The only possible comparison that comes to mind here is The Residents...but that only hints at what's going on. Seven puzzling tracks including "Macrocosmic," "Eternity Beckons," "Where No Human Hath Ever Trod," and "All the Way Out." Groovy groovin' mentally perplexing stuff.

Cat Temper - Purring For Vengeance (Independently released vinyl LP, Electronic/pop)
At the end of the second decade of the twenty first century, packaging has become an integral part of creating and selling music in any sort of physical format. Because most listeners are content to merely stream and download, it is only those collectors who are more focused and determined that crave the three-dimensional item that contains the music. As such, Mike Langlie is at the top of the heap. This talented fellow has been making and marketing his own music for years now. And he's gotten damn good at it in all notable aspects. For many years Langlie's musical project was the critically acclaimed toy piano band Twink. Having outdone just about everyone in the world of music using toy instruments, Mike apparently decided it was time for something new and different. Thus, Cat Temper was born. In terms of packaging, this release bears some wonderful similarities to the previous band. Not surprising to any of Langlie's fans, Purring For Vengeance is packaged to perfection. The cover artwork is fantastic...and even includes a black and white sticker warning of a 'Purrental Advisory' (haw!). The killer purple vinyl has cool swirling colors threaded into it. The music is retrospective in nature, recalling early electronic instrumentals from the 1980s and 1990s before the genre became so overblown and complex. By utilizing a great deal of restraint in his music, Langlie manages to create songs that are easy on the ears and mind...while challenging in terms of overall vibe. Twelve clever toe tappers here including "Tempest," "New Wave Knights," "Dark Matrix," "Toxigon," and "Freakture." Readers should also note that--since Purring was released--Mike has also released another album entitled Henry...which is an alternative soundtrack to the movie Eraserhead (one of our all-time favorite motion pictures ever made). Everything Mike Langlie releases looks and sounds great. Top pick.

Daydream - Daydream (CD-R, Noja Recordings, Rock/pop)
Wow. If this is any indication of what's happening in the undercurrents of rock/pop music in Italy, we need to focus more on that country. Daydream is a trio based in Southeast Sicily. The music immediately recalls the softer more hazy side of early recordings by Smashing Pumpkins. This self-titled debut is chock full of wonderfully cool guitar-based compositions with a difference. This band's music reminds us of some of the coolest 1990s underground bands in the United States. That decade was one of the all-time creative peaks for rock and pop bands in this country and now that time has sadly passed by. Thankfully there are still great artists and bands out there. The only difference is...now you have to look harder than ever before to find them. We're spoiled brat music snobs, of course. So fortunately for us things like this occasionally just pop up in our mailbox. Daydream is Enzo Pepi (guitars, vocals), Dalila Mammana (bass guitar), and Stefania Papa (drums). What is so amazing about these recordings is that there are so few tracks...and yet...there's incredible depth and focus to the music. There's nothing accessible or catchy here. These folks write and record hazy rock/pop music that creates a mood. But even if you can't immediately sing along, you'll probably find yourself listening to these tracks over and over and over again. Yup, they're that good. Eleven strangely satisfying cuts here including "A Patched Love," "It Rains On My Soul," "Electric Silence," and "I Don't Really Have To Wake Up." Super intelligent and wonderfully unusual. Highly recommended. Top pick.

Drunken Prayer - Cordelia Elsewhere (CD, Deer Lodge, Rock/pop/Americana)
The fifth full-length release from Drunken Prayer. This band was created by Morgan Geer who is best known for his other band Freakwater. When we started listening to Cordelia Elsewhere, the first band that came to mind was The Band. So when we finally read the press release that made the comparison, it seemed to validate our first impression. Geer is one of those guys whose music could easily reach a mass audience if all of the pieces were to fit into place. He has a strong presence and personality, and his songs have a nice warm familiar spirit. Produced by Mitch Easter, this album has an inviting organic sound that should appeal to all those vinyl heads out there. Elsewhere is a short album that clocks in at just under thirty-three minutes. But in that amount of time this guy makes his point on all ten of these cool reflective tracks. Geer's voice is particularly appealing. When this guy sings, you kinda get the feeling that it's someone you know talking to you. He's a true natural in so many ways, which is probably why he's become so popular in certain musical circles around the globe. Cool heartfelt songs include "Into the Water," "Rubble and Dust," "It Happens All the Time," and "Time To Go."

Kalyn Fay - Good Company (CD, Horton, Soft pop)
Good Company is an album that should really resonate with music fans. Unlike so many modern pop artists whose music is calculated, shallow, and phony, Kalyn Fay writes and records songs that are sincere and ultimately inspired. She embraces her home state of Oklahoma and writes lyrics that seem to come straight from her heart. After spinning this album a few times, we feel certain that Fay will become a hugely influential in-demand songwriter over the coming years. Her songs resonate with soul, and she has a voice that is pure magic. The compositions on this album combine elements from pop, soul, country, and folk. But the music is ultimately a very personal statement for this up-and-coming songwriter. This is one of those albums that is certain to stand the test of time. Recorded using traditional instruments, Kalyn's songs are absolutely timeless. Produced by Jesse Aycock, these tracks have a nice warm analog sound that is absorbing and real. For fans wanting something more substantial and deep, Good Company might just be what the doctor ordered. Truly absorbing tracks include "Good Company," "Wait For Me," "Alright In The End," and "Dressed In White." Expect to see and hear a lot about this talented lady in the coming months and years. She's got that certain something that makes her instantly stand out from the crowd. Pleasant, smooth, and genuine. Top pick.

Foidle Masks - Grippy Ladle Pocketbooks (CD, Fresh Dirty Music, Portable chips)
Foidle Masks provide bag of portable chip. Chip not making for genuine loud or compression. Chip is for what to be made into pigment and mosh. Tinny tinny the whisker snow, mapped forever total blow. Refresh list twice for mommy to whine. The wash and relishing now mope for the fringe. So forever the Grippy Ladle Pocketbooks shall mush and proddle. Two seconds, three years, five weeks to kitty. The kitty market is total spectrum of lord and tummy puddle. It HIGHLY RECOMMEND. It NO GOOD. It GREAT. It TERRIBLE. It THIS. It THAT. It WHATEVER you WANT it. It it. That what it. It It. Long time for noticing of ramp formation.

Go Time! - Midway (Independently released CD, Pop)
The guys in the Chicago-based band Go Time! are some of the most dedicated, consistent, and determined underground pop musicians in the United States. Over the past several years they've independently-released seven albums. And each and every one contains cool and credible songs that are played with passion and style. What impresses us most about Go Time! songs is the fact that the recordings have a genuine low fidelity sound. This is one of the key variables that makes these folks' music stand out in a crowd. At a point in time when almost everything is polished to perfection and features hundreds of layered instruments, it's the simpler and more direct recordings that catch our attention. The songs on Midway may remind listeners of The Seeds. There's a certain rawness in these tracks that gives them extra oomph. The band is comprised of Scott Niekelski (guitar, keyboards, lead vocals), Steve Grzenia (percussion, vocals), Paul Schmidt (guitar, vocals), and Mark Marketti (bass, vocals). Nineteen rockin' cuts here including "Hard To Pull The Trigger," "Next Time," "Ghost Inside Of Me," "Best Intentions," and "No Claims or Pretensions."

Alicia Hansen - Before You (CD, Canada Council For the Arts, Progressive pop)
Cool, free flowing, meticulous modern pop. Before You is the third full-length release from Canada's Alicia Hansen. We were very impressed with Alicia's debut (Fractography) that came out in 2011. The songs on this album exist in the same general territory, but now the songs are even more mature and intriguing. The best single word to describe the overall vibe here could be...haunting. These tracks feature exceptionally intelligent lyrics and cool winding melodies that are a far cry from the world of commercial music in the twenty-first century. The vocals are incredible. Hansen plays piano and sings on these compositions and is accompanied by Ben Brown on drums, Jesse Zubot on violin, Peggy Lee on cello, Darren Parris on bass, and Lee Hutzulak on electronics. If there's one slight reference point that comes to mind here that reference point would be Curved Air. Canada has been and continues to be a true hotbed of credible talent in the 2000s. This album is an excellent example of why the country is so highly regarded among diehard music fans. Eleven spellbinding cuts including "Disintegrating Heart," "I Disagree," "Habits," and "I Don't Believe It."

Helium Horse Fly - Hollowed (CD, Dipole Experiment, Progressive)
Very, very different. At a point in time when most Americans want the same old crap churned out over and over and over again, the Belgium-based band Helium Horse Fly has almost no chance for any sort of commercial success in our country. But our guess is that these musicians couldn't care in the least. If they did, they'd be making a completely different sort of boring music that would appeal to the shallow masses. Hollowed is a difficult and involved experience, definitely not for the faint of heart and not for those who want something safe and samey. To try and give some indication of what this sounds like. The folks in this band sound something like Henry Cow mixed with Diamanda Galas, except with a much heavier emphasis on doom and gloom than either would imply. The band is comprised of Marie Billy (vocals, keyboards), Stephane Dupont (guitar, vocals, keyboards), Dimitri Iannello (bass), and Gil Chevigne (drums). These four musicians have a sound that is decidedly uncommercial and strangely distant. The cover art is fantastic...a photo of a naked man crouching and his head has been replaced by the eyeless skull of a dead bird. A frightening image to be certain...and it gives a good indication of what to expect from the music itself. Strangely compelling stuff, progressive in nature, but far more peculiar than anything we've heard thus far in 2019. Six perplexing tracks including "Happiness," In A Deathless Spell," "Progeny," and "Monochrome."

Hogz In Dandyland - Dr. Grimm's Parade (Independently released CD, Pop)
Genuinely real underground music threaded with elements of classic pop. Hogz In Dandyland is Brad Hogge...a multi-instrumentalist based in Williamsburg, Virginia. Unlike so many technology driven pop bands in the twenty-first century with no heart and soul, Hogge writes songs that have a warm human sound and feel. But unlike many underground artists whose music is difficult and unnecessarily artsy, he opts instead to write and record songs that sound instantly familiar and friendly. It's particularly interesting that the album was named in memory of an entomology professor named Dr. James K. Grimm. How cool is that...? This cool independently-released album presents ten intelligent tracks that feature cool winding melodies and interesting lyrics. Brad plays most of the instruments, but other players are also featured on these recordings...including percussionist Miguel Urbitztondo (who has played with Cracker, Camper Van Beethoven, Sparklehorse, and Daniel Johnston). Dr. Grimm's Parade is one nice smooth spin. The songs are consistently entertaining, with arrangements that are a perfect fit for each track. In addition to the music, we're also impressed with the nifty hand-drawn/painted cover art. And fortunately for fans, there's a foldout lyric sheet included so you can follow along with the thought provoking wordplay. Totally cool cuts include "Leafhopper," "Clock-Eating Dragon," "Kite Without A String," and "Dr. Grimm's Parade." Well-crafted and inspired. Recommended. Top pick.

I Am Casting - Carnival Barkers (CD, Cleave Recordings, Progressive pop)
Intriguing modern pop with cool melodies and smart lyrics. Although this music is easy on the mind and ears, it's puzzlingly difficult trying to describe what it sounds like. The only possible similar things that come to mind are babysue favorite obscure band The Solipsistics and the Genesis album Selling England By the Pound. But while both might give you some indication of what's going on here, in the end the folks in I Am Casting have really created their own unique sound. If we hadn't read the press release, we would never have guessed that the band is based in North Carolina. The mainman behind the music is Cole Guerra, a multi-instrumentalist who has a peculiar knack for composing truly interesting and unique songs. The lyrics are printed inside the CD cover which is very helpful in digesting these compositions. Cole's words are light years beyond what we normally hear in the twenty-first century. But what really impresses us most is the voice. Guerra has a really cool subdued way of singing that is immediately genuine and personal. The cover photo of a man from the past holding a baby and a garden hose and standing in front of an elephant (?!!) is somehow a perfect visual fit for the music on this album. A truly creative release that doesn't sound like other stuff we're hearing in 2019. Eleven captivating tracks including "Charmer," "Window," "Anchored," "Lullaby," and "Muggers." The more we spin this one...the more substance there is in these tracks. Wonderfully warm and original from start to finish. Top pick.

ICK ICK

Secure ick ick.
Make sure it pure.
Program ick ick.

I Wear* Experiment - Jupiterz (Independently released CD-R, Progressive pop)
The sophomore full-length release from Estonia's I Wear* Experiment. Interestingly, this album was inspired by The Great Red Spot...a storm that has been going on continuously on the planet Jupiter for more than 200 years. How cool is that? These tracks sound something like Kate Bush mixed with club/techno music. There are some definite dance beats happening here, but the music has far more substance than one would normally associate with dance music. This band is the trio comprised of Hando Jaksi, Mikk Simson, and Johanna Eenma. In 2016 they won the EMA Debut Album of the Year Award for their debut album Patience. And now they seem perfectly poised to push the bar even further with the follow up. For folks like us who remember/recall the whole 1990s techno/dance movement, the overall vibe here will be strangely familiar. Six cool tracks including "Jupiterz," "Dogs," "Chances," and "Wait For Another." Trippy, rhythmic, and smart.

Ted Russell Kamp - Walkin' Shoes (CD, Poetry of the Moment, Pop)
Pure, direct, hummable feelgood toe-tapping pop from Ted Russell Kamp. Mr. Kamp isn't playing for the ultra cool hipsters out there, nor is he trying to forge into new territories with his music. Just as adventurous music has it's place in our world, so does familiar sounding stuff. Up to this point in time, Ted is probably best known as the bass player in the band Shooter Jennings. But he's done so much more than that. In addition to playing bass with/for some well-known musical stars, he's also acted as producer. And he has also released no less than eleven (!) solo albums. Walkin' Shoes might just be the one that changes his career path. These friendly sounding tracks should appeal to a wide cross-section of music fans...particularly those who love the sound of classic artists like The Band, Leon Russell, and Waylon Jennings. Kamp's songs combine elements from rock, blues, folk, and Americana. He has some amazing folks playing with him on this album, including John Schreffler, Brian Whelan, Dan Wistrom, Jaime Douglass, and more. Unlike some solo musicians who want to hog the spotlight and do everything themselves, Ted seems to take the opposite approach...co-writing most songs with other musicians and giving everyone credit where credit is due. What we find most appealing about this fellow is his voice. Ted comes across like a real genuine person sharing his thoughts with his listeners. He's not trying to push a phony image or blow people away with volume and technology. Ted Russell Kamp's mission seems to simply entertain without all the gimmicks and unnecessary fanfare. Killer tracks include "Home Away From Home," "We Don't Have To Be Alone," "Heart Under Pressure," "Written In Stone," and "Roll On Through the Night."

Phil Keaggy, Tony Levin, & Jerry Marotta (aka KLM) - The Bucket List (Independently released CD, Progressive/instrumental)
Three of the most talented and prolific musicians in the world get together to record an album. Not surprisingly the end result is...fantastic. Most of you already know these guys by name, but for those who don't...you've no doubt already heard them play on what are most likely some of your favorite recordings. We won't go into the long list of artists and bands each of these guys has played with here because what matters most is the album at hand. If you're a fan of progressive rock past, present, or future, you owe it to yourself to get this album. It's chock full of superb and complex modern progressive rock with a heavy emphasis on technique and style. There are those cases in the world of music where tons of experience results in musicians losing their drive and inspiration. The opposite seems to be the case here. Despite the fact that these fellows have already made huge contributions to the world of music, they obviously still love what they do. You can hear it in every note they play. Phil Keaggy plays guitar like no one else. His fluid style is expressive, precise, and articulate. He is an artist who becomes one with his instrument. This man is truly able to express his feelings through the notes that he plays. Tony Levin is one of the most talented bass players that has ever graced our planet. If you've never seen this guy play, you need to. When Levin plays it's like he enters a higher consciousness and/or state of existence. There's no one else like him. Jerry Marotta is a percussionists' percussionist. He's played with some hugely famous artists over the years. If you want to be blown away, visit his web site to see the list of albums he's played on...unbelievable. But these days his focus seems to be on his own choice of truly credible projects with substance. The guy is one pure magical experience on drums. His precise unexpected rhythmic twists provide just the right amount of the unexpected in these tracks. Forty seven plus minutes of some of the best progressive music created in the twenty-first century. Killer tracks include "Sometimes 11," "Midland Crisis," "Where's Phil," "Caravan," and "Blue Hawaii." Get this album and experience the light fantastic. Highly recommended. Top pick.

King Crimson - Meltdown: Live in Mexico (Triple CD + Blu-ray, Panegyric / Inner Knot, Progressive)
Hefty four disc package featuring the band King Crimson playing live at their five night residency at Teatro Metropolitan in Mexico City in 2017. The three CDs feature over two and a half hours of music and the blu-ray disc features over two hours of extremely polished multi-camera video. King Crimson is one of those rare bands in the universe who have somehow managed to retain their credibility for a very long time. While other bands have sold out or regressed into baby food manufacturers for the masses, the musicians in this band always seem to be on a continuous focused path to provide credible music with a heavy emphasis on quality. There's a lot to take in here. The three audio discs present the band playing an interesting variety of compositions from their lengthy discography. But the blu-ray is the real treat, because to really appreciate what the guys do...you really need to see them playing. The three drummers that get things going are nothing short of amazing...all of them are uniquely synched with one another, providing a riveting rhythmic display. Tony Levin is particularly interesting to watch, as he makes playing some of the most difficult bass lines in the world somehow look easy and effortless. It's amazing how little Robert Fripp has changed over the years. He's always been this odd relaxed fellow who looks much more like a college professor than a rock musician. When you put all eight musicians in the band together, you have a truly formidable force to be reckoned with. The multi-camera video is slick and provides a much more varied look at the band than what the original concert goers saw. While other 1970s progressive bands have either given up or choose to simply retread what has gone before, the guys in this band continue pushing forward into new frontiers with their music. This is a nice super slick package that includes a cool booklet with photos and information.

Kiwi Jr. - Football Money (CD, Mint, Pop/rock)
As much as we try to avoid it, at certain points we just can't help but be label snobs. But it's not our fault (nothing ever is). It's the fault of labels like Mint that cause us to become label snobs. And in this case it's also the fault of the folks in the band Kiwi Jr. for creating such a totally fantastic album and then conspiring with the folks at Mint to release it. The bad thing about music in 2019 is that there are so many bland bands and artists that all sound alike...taking a totally safe and samey approach to making music. But the good thing...is that it makes truly cool and refreshing artists so much easier to identify. The tracks on Football Money made an immediate impression on us because there's a definite excitement happening here. And that excitement is created by the pure energy, focus, and passion of the people making the music. No blandness or sameyness anywhere on this album, that's for sure. If you're thinking about giving up on pop and rock because it's so hard to find the real stuff, you owe it to yourself to give this album a few spins. Kiwi Jr. is comprised of Jeremy Gaudet on guitar and vocals, Brohan Moore on drums, Brian Murphy on guitar, and Mike Walker on bass. The only possible pitfall here...is that this band's music is so intelligent that most listeners probably just won't get it. But the folks who do will be rewarded in huge ways. And you can bet your booties that the folks who get it will be forever fans. This album's short, less than thirty minutes long. But in just over twenty-seven minutes these folks make a mark like other bands seldom do. Killer gripping tracks include "Murder in the Cathedral," "Leslie," "Comeback Baby," "Football Money," "Swimming Pool," and "Wicked Witches." Early in the year to be making such a claim but...you can be certain that this album will be among the very best things released in 2019. Highly recommended. Top pick.

Luxury Mane - Domestic Bliss (Independently released vinyl LP, Underground pop)
Wow...this is one really cool spin. Underground guitar pop bands seem to slowly be on the rise in the United States (finally...!). Kinda gives us some hope for the future in a way. Over the past few years, we've been surprised time and time again by music coming from Florida. Once again, the Sunshine State has produced a cool and credible band that is instantly appealing. Based in St. Petersburg, Luxury Mane is comprised of Billy Summer, Kyle Lovell, and Aaron Kyle Nelson (one of whom may also be known as Lemonjello Kane). These musicians make impossibly nifty guitar pop that is both inspired and thought provoking. And also strangely psychedelic at times. Pressed on beautiful pink vinyl, Domestic Bliss is a fantastic collection of cool modern guitar pop compositions that are smart, catchy, and resilient. We knew as soon as we heard the first track ("The Doors") that we were hooked on this one. These guys combine dreamy guitars with killer rhythms and addictive melodies. The end result...is a wildly rewarding audio experience that fans of underground pop aren't likely to forget. The vocals are the best. By not trying too hard and just letting the words flow, this band provides really unique stream-of-consciousness vocals that are the perfect icing on the cake. This is one of those rare cases where the musicians are doing everything right. The band name gets an A+. The album title gets an A+. The packaging gets an A+. And, most importantly, the music gets an A+. Add a few more pluses to the pluses that are already there...and you'll begin to get an idea of how truly blown away we are by this one. Although we haven't yet listened to 'em all, we noticed that the band has several releases out. Our guess is that each and every one is a must have. Even though it's so early in the year, we can say with absolute certainty that Domestic Bliss will be one of the top underground pop albums of 2019. Yup, it really is that good. Smart cerebral tracks include "The Doors," "Domestic Bliss," "The Sludger," "Rushed," "White Tiger," and "Sitting Still." Highly recommended. TOP PICK.

John Mayall - Nobody Told Me (CD, Forty Below, Blues/rock)
In the world of blues rock, there are few names as familiar to music fans as John Mayall. The man is a legend, to say the least. And the fact that he's still out there doing his thing is truly remarkable. The tracks on Nobody Told Me were recorded at The Foo Fighters' Studio 606. These recordings have a nice warm analog sound and they feature some mind-boggling guest musicians. The list of artists lending their talents on these tunes includes Todd Rundgren, Little Steven Van Zandt, Alex Lifeson, Joe Bonamassa, Larry McCray, Carolyn Wonderland, Greg Rzab, Jay Davenport, Billy Watts, and more. Shortly after recording this one, Mayall had an unexpected health condition pop up out of nowhere which explains the album title. Co-produced with Forty Below mainman Eric Corne (who also handled engineering and mixing), this album has a nice thick rhythm vibe without ever sounding unnecessarily glossy or slick. Ten rousing tracks here including "What Have I Done Wrong," "Evil and Here to Stay," "Distant Lonesome Train," and "Nobody Told Me." Another credible release from the man who has become a legend to so many.

Gus McKay - Talisman (CD, RPM, Americana/blues/pop)
Interesting moody Americana pop from Australia's Gus McKay. We hear lots of artists in the United States and Canada playing this style of music, but this is the first time we've heard this kinda stuff coming out of Australia. McKay has been writing, recording, producing, and performing for about 20 years now. So that may explain why the songs on Talisman have such a mature and fully realized sound. Gus is a particularly talented guitarist, coming up with some amazingly diverse sounds on the instrument. Backing musicians Ronan Charles, Phil Waldron, and Paul "Pax" Andrews all do a superb job providing just the right foundation for McKay's songs. At a point in time when so many musicians are trying way too hard to sound believable and credible, this guy seems to just let his music easily flow...which makes for a rather cool listening experience. Gus has a nice loose vocal style that should immediately connect with listeners. Recommended for blues, rock, and Americana fans. Ten well-crafted tracks including "Art of Living," "Hundred Acres," "Bohemian Life," and "Gingin Morning."

Montana - Change in the Weather (CD, Angel Air, Pop)
The guys in Montana were way ahead of their time. These guys wrote and recorded what today might be described as Americana pop...with a heavy emphasis on pop and a lighter emphasis on Americana. Originally released in 1981, Change in the Weather spins like a collection of FM radio hits. Though the lead track ("The Shoes On The Other Foot Tonight") is their best known song, just about every cut on this album sounds like a single. The band was comprised of Kurt Bergeron, Rob Quist, Greg Reichenberg, Terry Robinson, and Jerry Zalnoski. These guys recorded music that harkens back to groups like The Eagles, Jackson Browne, and The Band. Produced by Randy Bean, the tracks on this album have a nice slick sound. But what comes through loud and clear here are the songs themselves. These feelgood tracks have a light and airy sound that is instantly friendly and appealing. The sad part is that Montana was one of many bands whose career was cut short due to a tragedy. In 1987 the band's private plane crashed, killing Robinson and Bergeron. This is an album that's perfectly poised to be revisited by music fans the world over. These recordings have held up exceptionally well over time...they're just the kind of light escapist pop that listeners love. Instantly catchy cuts include "The Shoes On The Other Foot Tonight," "In Without Knocking," "She's Never Gone," and "Feminine Fever."

Pezzettino - Resin (Independently released CD-R, Pensive pop)
Pensive minimalistic pop with cool threads of intelligent creativity. Pezzettino is the recording project created by Margaret Stutt. She's released music under different names, but Resin is her overall eleventh full-length release. Decidedly unlike so many superficial generic musicians in the world of commercial music whose music has no substance whatsoever, Stutt doesn't play the game in conventional ways. Rather than making music with the idea of making money or selling out venues, Margaret apparently creates mainly as a means of therapy and communication. Listening to the tracks on this album, it's obvious that this music was created out of pure artistic integrity. Although these songs are wonderfully fulfilling and intriguing, it's unlikely you'll be hearing them on mainstream media. Margaret is one super intelligent lady whose music is probably above the heads of most folks. The vocals are hushed and subdued, and the arrangements are strangely chilling. Originally from Racine, Wisconsin (!?!), Stutt eventually moved to New York City before finally relocating to Oakland, California. If you're like us and are always on a search to find music that has real substance, there's a good chance you'll find Resin a very rewarding audio experience. Using music as a vehicle to express her true inner self, Margaret manages to create songs that can have real and lasting effects on her listeners. Wonderfully resonant tracks include "Home," "If You're Listening," "Shower Song," and "Cloudy Covers."

Bill Pritchard - Midland Lullabies (CD, Tapete, Pop)
Upon hearing the very first track on this album, we were immediately reminded of babysue favorite Pearlfishers. Presented simply and using piano as the main driving instrument, Bill Pritchard and his associates provide superb melodies and an overall pensive vibe. According to the press release that accompanied this disc, this is the album that Pritchard always wanted to make...referring to himself as a "shabby suited crooner." Midland Lullabies is all about melodies and lyrics, and most of these are likely to stick with listeners for decades. Bill's got a killer knack for writing classic pop songs that are intelligent and thoughtful. This is not throwaway pop. Pritchard is a sensitive man with a genuine spirit and personality. And both bleed through beautifully into his compositions. This is a short album just over thirty-four minutes long. But over the course of these thirteen tracks this talented fellow gets his point across loud and clear. Produced by Tim Bradshaw, these tracks have a nice open sound that allows the listener to concentrate on the songs themselves. We love Bill's voice. His vocals never sound forced, and he has a voice that is perfectly suited for piano pop. Cool tracks include "Lullaby," "The Last Temptation of Brussels," "Tuesday Morning," and "Forever."

The Proper Ornaments - 6 Lenins (CD, Tapete, Underground pop)
Really cool and moody melodic guitar pop with strange soothing qualities. The Proper Ornaments is the British duo of James Hoare and Max Claps along with Danny Nellis on bass and Bobby Syme on drums. These guys have apparently had some recent obstacles that really got in the way of their music. But from the sounds we're hearing on 6 Lenins, you'd never know it. These tracks have a cool effervescent sound that features trance-like guitars, heavenly vocals, and rhythms that flow as purely as water. Although the songs had been written beforehand, the actual recording of the album took place in a mere two weeks. Just goes to show how big a part inspiration plays in the process when things go as they should. We love the fact that these compositions feature a nice open sparse sound that isn't hampered by overproduction or too many layers of instruments. If you're a fan of simple and direct (two of the hardest things to find in music these days), there's a very good chance you will find these songs captivating and slightly hypnotic. This is some of the most beautiful music we've heard of late. At a point in time when so many bands sound like carbon copies of one another, The Proper Ornaments are a refreshing blast of originality. Ten totally gripping tracks. Our favorites include "Apologies," "Crepuscular Child," "Song For John Lennon," "Six Lenins," and "In The Garden." Highly recommended. Top pick.

Luther Russell - Medium Cool (CD, Fluff & Gravy, Pop/rock)
Exceptionally well-written pop/rock from Los Angeles, California-based songwriter/producer Luther Russell. We've heard tons of bands and artists over the years who either sound like Big Star or were influenced by the band. But this album is something different. Rather than sounding like it was merely influenced, Russell's music seems to actually channel the genuine spirit of the band into his music. The last time we heard someone effectively channel the Big Star sound it was in the mid-1980s when we were turned onto Game Theory (whose leader Scott Miller is only now being recognized for his incredible contributions to the world of underground pop). If Alex Chilton, Chris Bell, and Scott Miller were still with us, we have no doubt they'd be blown away by this album. Medium Cool features some of the best moments that music fans associate with Big Star and early solo recordings by Chilton. Each and every track has a classic sound and feel that should ignite the passion of just about anyone who loves good solid melodic guitar pop. Russell not only writes killer songs, but he's got a voice that really pushes his songs to the next level. Combining infectious melodies with killer guitars and cool driving rhythms, Russell and his associates have managed to come up with a timeless album chock full of captivating tracks. Ten totally groovy cuts including "Deep Feelings," "Can't Be Sad," "At Your Feet," "Have You Heard?", and "Can't Turn Away." This one's a total knockout. An instant classic. Highly recommended. Top pick.

Skinny Girl Diet - Ideal Woman (Vinyl LP, Happy Happy Birthday To Me, Rock)
Before we begin here...we should mention that we've been listening to a lot of early Redd Kross lately so...that may explain why we find this album so appealing. Skinny Girl Diet is the British duo of Delilah Holliday (vocals, guitars) and Ursula Holliday (drums). If you're looking for slick, glossy, commercial music...look elsewhere. These ladies play loud raw music that's brimming over with rough edges and a true spontaneous feel. In the universe where these ladies operate, the overall feeling and vibe are far more important than the musical elements. If feeling is everything, then everything is as it should be. These girls are very young. So young that they apparently won't even be able to drink on their United States tour this year (!). But rather than sounding young and innocent, these girls come off sounding confident and adventurous. Back in the 1990s many were shocked to find that some of the girls in the world of music could kick the bonkers out of the guys with volume and intensity. These Holiday girls are doing the same in 2019. They've got a lot more power and kick than 98% of the guy bands we hear. The tracks are simple and direct featuring only the basic ingredients. Just goes to show where a whole helluva lot of inspiration can get you. Raw, ripping, roaring...YES. This is the kinda music the world ought be listening to and supporting. Too bad most listeners are so focused on supporting corporate generic crap artists (who don't even need the money) that they can't be bothered with genuinely cool people who are making real music. Truly adventurous stuff with a decidedly spontaneous feel. Gripping cuts include "Witch of the Waste," "Shed Your Skin," "Western Civilization," "Timing," and "Clickbait."

Neal Smith - Killsmith Halloween: Best of Killsmith 2008-2018 (CD, Kachina, Rock/pop)
New best of collection from ex-Alice Cooper drummer Neal Smith featuring eleven tracks plus an additional unreleased track. Killsmith Halloween is one hard rockin' album, chock full of loud guitars, killer rhythms, and intense vocals. Neal obviously has not softened or gotten tamer over time. On these tracks his band Killsmith rips and roars like there's no tomorrow. We've always felt that the original Alice Cooper band members never received the recognition they deserved. So much attention was focused on Vince Furnier's stage antics that most folks seemed to overlook the incredible talents of the individual musicians. But as years have passed it seems as if more people now realize how technically proficient Michael Bruce, Dennis Dunaway, Glen Buxton, and Neal Smith are/were. When Vince dropped all of these guys and went off on his own, the results just...weren't so great (Welcome To My Nightmare...not good). Fortunately over time Furnier's later Cooper releases got better and better...and now they're so good they even surprise us. But back to Killsmith... Neal's band will appeal to those who appreciated his skills decades ago. These rockin' tracks feature loud guitars, steady driving rhythms, and really snarly attitude-drenched vocals. Twelve loud tracks that could wake up the dead...and then some. Cool pounding rockers include "Evil Voodoo Moon," "Cemetery of the Damned," "Pandemonium," and "Monsters in the Attic."

Straw Dogs - Your Immaculate Machine (Independently released CD, Crafty, Pop)
The sixth full-length release from Seattle, Washington-based band Straw Dogs. The tracks on Your Immaculate Machine have a nice smooth familiar sound that recalls artists from the mid to late 1970s. But even though they may sound familiar, these are all songs you haven't heard before. Using only the basics to create their music, the folks in Straw Dogs manage to create cool hummable tracks that most folks should be able to relate to. Even though the overall sound is different, some of the songs on this album remind us of the 1970s British band Stackridge. Mainman Dave von Beck has an instantly friendly vocal style that really draws listeners in. What impresses us most here is the fact that these recordings sound like real people playing real music. You won't hear songs that have been digitally tweaked to perfection, as these musicians have the good sense to realize that when things sound too perfect...they also sound perfectly...boring. Mixed and mastered by Troy Glessner, this album has a sound that will appeal to those who appreciate music recorded on analog equipment. The sound is warm and real and never hampered to too many instruments or unnecessary effects. Fourteen tracks that are genuine, real, and ultimately inspired. Our favorites include "Something To Love," "Part of the World," "Rise Above," "The Story of You," and "Soldier On."

The Telescopes - Exploding Head Syndrome (CD, Tapete, Progressive/psychedelic)
Brand new album from one of our top favorite bands on one of our top favorite labels. We've been into everything The Telescopes have recorded for years now. This British band is like no other. They create peculiar music that sounds like strange voyages into unknown universes. But although they've created one interesting album after another for a very long time, the band remains an obscure diamond in the world of music. And that could be due to the fact that the music treads into territories that are too strange and obscure for casual listeners. There are no possible hit singles on Exploding Head Syndrome. And there are no catchy choruses or cute catch phrases. The one constant in The Telescopes is a fellow named Stephen Lawrie. Like Michael Gira of The Swans in many ways, Lawrie doesn't seem at all interested in the commercial world of music. He and his associates are mainly driven by the desire to create and come up with compositions that inspire moods and challenge the minds of listeners. Hypnotic in some ways and droney at times, the tracks on Syndrome exist in a universe that is purely their own. Telescopes songs are to the twenty-first century what British psychedelic progressive bands were to the 1970s. These tracks can be used to put the listener on a different plane of existence. They're strange, they don't follow traditional musical paths, and they're ultimately very intelligent. What is perhaps most telling about this band is how passionate their fans are. Even though there aren't millions of Telescopes fans around the world, those who love the band really really really love them. And they don't just listen to one song and forget the group, they follow along with whatever Lawrie and his pals have to offer That says a lot. This album is yet another mind-tingling addition to a wonderfully imaginative discography. Killer tracks include "Everything Turns Into You," "Until the End," "Nothing Was Held," and "Why Are We Doing This To Each Other?" Perplexing, resilient...and ultimately wonderful stuff. Highly recommended. Top pick.

Stephan Thelen - Fractal Guitar (CD, Moonjune, Instrumental/progressive)
Intriguing heady instrumentals from guitarist/composer Stephan Thelen. Up to this point in time Thelen has been best known as the leader of the band Sonar. Prior to that, he also played in several other bands and has also created music for various theater and film productions. In the band Sonar, Thelen played guitar minus effects (with the exception of some reverb). On this album, he dives headfirst into the world of effects...allowing them to be used as an integral part of the overall sound. Fractal Guitar presents five lengthy pieces. The shortest clocks in at eight minutes and forty-two seconds while the longest stretches out to well over eighteen minutes. Stephan has some true heavyweights lending their talent and support here. Players on this album include Markus Reuter (who also acts as co-producer), David Torn, Matt Tate, Jon Durant, Manuel Pasquinelli, Bill Walker, Henry Kaiser, Barry Cleveland, Andi Pupato, and Benno Kaiser. If you're familiar with any of these musicians, you'll have some idea of what to expect here. Working with executive producer and label owner Leonardo Pavkovic, Thelen and his associates have created some wonderful mind bending tracks that incorporate trippy sounds with traditional elements like melody and rhythm. The two combine to create an intriguing audio landscape that includes plenty of exploration and creativity. And if you like cool guitars (we certainly do), you'll find a whole helluva lot of cool sounds to expand your mind and your universe. Stephan is a rather extraordinary player. He effectively conveys all kinds of moods and emotions. Even though these compositions are lengthy, they are never ever boring. Whether you're in the mood for background music or something more mentally absorbing, you'll find a wealth of material to tickle your brain. Cool perplexing cuts include "Briefing For a Descent Into Hell," "Road Movie," and "Urban Nightscape." Wildly inventive and exceedingly precise. Super nice. Top pick.

Tullycraft - The Railway Prince Hotel (Vinyl LP & download, Happy Happy Birthday To Me, Underground pop)
Cool and clever underground pop that is refreshingly intelligent. We love it when lyrics are an integral part of the equation in a band's music. That's certainly the case here. And fortunately for everyone, a nice readable full-size lyric sheet is included with this vinyl LP so you can be sure to catch every word. The band Tullycraft has been in existence since 1995. The Railway Prince Hotel is the band's seventh full-length release. But from the sounds we're hearing, you'd never know it. This album has the all the cool vibes we normally associate with a group who has just started making music. The energy and excitement are there, as well as the obvious real desire to simply make entertaining music. If there's any single reason why this band hasn't progressed beyond underground status, it's probably because the songs are just too smart for casual music fans. The complex lyrical wordplay might very well confuse the majority of listeners. There are a whole helluva lot of words happening here, so if you're not one who is keen on following along on interesting trains of thought and simply want to nod your head to mindless music...you may end up feeling lost as you spin this one. But more adventurous listeners are bound to get a major kick out of all the intriguing stuff happening. The packaging is great. This nifty 12" vinyl LP is housed inside a very simple sleeve...which is perfect, because the music easily stands on its own. The band is comprised of Chris Munford, Corianton Hale, Jenny Mears, and Sean Tollefson...along with additional players Evan Mosher, Wayne Meaphnel, and Pete Remine. Wonderfully creative cuts include "Midi Midinette," "Passing Observations," "Has Your Boyfriend Lost His Flavor on the Bedpost Overnight?", "It's Not Explained, It's Delaware," and "Vacaville." Truly clever and mind expanding modern pop not meant for the masses. Recommended. Top pick.

The Velvet Ants - Arrows Always (Independently released CD-R, Zeptune, Underground pop/rock)
Arrows Always is the fifth full-length release from The Velvet Ants, but for us it serves as an introduction to the band's music. We can sum up our reaction to this one in a single word and that word is...YES. These guys are doing everything right, writing and recording smart modern pop using only the essential ingredients. Their songs have wonderful soaring qualities and a warm unique vibe that will be particularly appealing to underground pop fans around the world. To give you a frame of reference, the songs on Arrows Always remind us in many ways of Teenage Fanclub and The Shoes. These cool mid-tempo pop/rock tracks feature smart chord changes and heavenly harmonies that will melt your heart and ears. These tracks have addictive qualities that we normally associate with underground pop bands from the 1990s, one of the most truly creative decades in the history of music. The album features two phenomenal guest artists...Ken Stringfellow (of The Posies) and Jordon Zadorozny (of Blinker The Star). If you're fans of either of these guys, our guess is that you'll also totally dig the sound of The Velvet Ants. With most bands, the vocals are the weakest link. That is not the case here. The vocals on this album are absolutely out-of-this-world cool. Ten captivating tracks including "Yours To Keep," "Helium," "You Don't Like This," and "All I Wanted." Top pick.

Ally Venable - Texas Honey (CD, Ruf, Rock/blues/pop)
The folks at Germany's Ruf Records label scored big time when they signed critically acclaimed blues guitarist Samantha Fish. And now they're going to have the exact same kind of success with Ally Venable. At a point in time when so many people need a good solid kick wherever the boot might need to go, Texas Honey is just what the good doctor ordered. Like Fish, Venable is proving that the girls can show the guys a thing or two in the world of blues and rock guitar. This young lady's got the talent, the looks, and the voice to go all the way. Produced by legendary guitarist Mike Zito, this album has a nice thick sound...but it was created using only the most basic and essential ingredients. As all good music fans should know by now...when you've got the songs and the skills, you don't need fifty thousand overdubs and tons of effects. Ally's got some incredible musicians backing her. Providing the perfect solid foundation are Bobby Wallace on bass guitar, Elijah Owings on drums and percussion, and Lewis Stephens on piano/Wurlitzer. Lending some additional zest are guitarists Mike Zito (mentioned above) and Eric Gales. If you love pop, you'll find plenty of catchy songs here. If you love rock, you'll certainly find that. And if you love truly snazzy guitar, you're absolutely certain to get your daily dose (and more) here. Eleven kickass cuts including "Nowhere To Hide," "Texas Honey," "One Sided Misunderstanding," and "Careless Love."

Zan Zone - It's Only Natural (Independently released CD, Groove pop)
The first thing that caught our attention about this release was the packaging. These folks deserve some kind of award for their marketing approach. It's Only Natural refers to food, and on the cover the band member's heads are placed in a pile kinda like potatoes or onions or something. Open up the tri-fold digipak sleeve...and you'll find the "Musitional Facts" along with cans of each musician's heads. It's a cool approach that's not only funny, but thought provoking. Fortunately for all, it's also a good indication of what the music's like. The folks in Zan Zone write and record what might best be described as groove pop. There are all kinds of sounds and influences spinning around in the mix here, but groove pop probably sums things up best. The songs on this album are very rhythmic and melodic and they're also surprisingly accessible and catchy. This is the fourth full-length release from this Brooklyn-based band. Bandleader Zan Burnham has pulled together a diverse collection of songs, musicians, and sounds to create an album that could easily appeal to millions upon millions of music fans. The songs are friendly and funny and they're infused with a cool perspective on the world. Eleven captivating tracks including "For the Rising Sun," "He's Coming Home," "Dem Blues Is Bad," and "Champagne Enthusiasm."
