March 2023: News, Views and Perspectives

NEWS. * These are not exact quotes because they have (apparently) been said in slightly different ways by several different people, but two of my all-time favorites are:  "I would never want to belong to any club that would have me as a member" and "When everyone thinks alike no one is thinking."  * Nothing has happened during the past few weeks, which makes it difficult coming up with content for this section.  According to the latest reports from top agencies, a few things are predicted to happen over the next two to three weeks so next month this section could possibly be longer than it is this month.  But ultimately who cares, because all news is trivial.  Unless, of course, the news is about something that is not important in the first place.  In those cases, it can occasionally be worth at least a chuckle or two.  *  After making the smart move to Spain, the MoonJune label continues releasing some of the best progressive music out there.  The latest releases include Stephan Thelen's Fractal Guitar 3, Reuter, Motzer & Grohowskil's Bleed and Anchor and Burden's Kosmonautic Pilgrimage.  *  Underground favorite popsters Ransom and the Subset are back with another groovy full-length entitled Perfect Crimes (on the Tune Stack / Futureman Records labels).  *  David Sanchez is the one man band named The Lamp LighterUltraviolet Catastrophe, his latest full-length release, combines elements of 1960s and 1970s funk, rock and soul with 1990s alternative and desert fuzz.  *  Everybody's favorite twenty-first century label Think Like A Key has just released their first round of DIY releases.  The following albums are out now:  R. Stevie Moore - Games & Groceries, Brian Bordello - Songs For Cilla To Sing, Patto - Patto, Fran Ashcroft - A Tour of British Duck Ponds, Hawk Percival - Night Moods and my own LMNO3 Deluxe.  Listeners will find a lot to enjoy on these releases...as well as anything/everything on the TLAK label.  *  A lot of people are talking about a lot of stuff that a lot of other people are talking about.  And so the cycle continues, as everyone continues discussing the same old tired topics that were discussed decades ago.  *  The year is 2023.  Good citizens think the way they are told to think.  Good citizens support the people that other good citizens support.  Good citizens do not express ideas that are considered unacceptable by other good citizens.  Good citizens have morals that fit perfectly in line with the morals of all the other good citizens.  The year is 2023.  *  One of the few good things about the internet is that it still allows strangers to connect out of the blue.  One of the latest connections is a California artist named Nicolas (Nik) Ceasar who produces what he calls 'scary art.'  His artwork certainly fits in that category, although it's really a lot more than just scary.  Ceasar's paintings, sculptures and illustrations are precise and finely-tuned...and they immediately grab viewers by their throats.  I love the fact that there's a cool sense of humor layered into the scaryness.  Nicolas is doing everything right with his cool kickass art.  Recommended.  *  Some of you out there in the world of music will recall crossing paths with a well-versed bass player out west named William Maxwell.  After playing with a variety of different artists over the years, William added telescopes and cameras into his creative zone...and he now focuses his attention on space photography.  He's got a whole slew of incredible photographs up on Flickr that will absolutely blow your mind.  I had no idea technology had advanced so much in the world of telescopes.  Anyone/everyone out there who (like myself) loves all the stuff flowing from the James Webb Telescope should check out Maxwell's photography.  Looking into the stars may very well remind you that all the huge big issues happening on our planet are really just teeny weeny tiny and minuscule in the big scheme of things.  *  You know how weird memories sometimes pop into your head out of nowhere?  For some reason I suddenly remembered being seven years old, running around all over the place singing "Is That All There Is?" by Peggy Lee.  It was one of my favorite songs, probably because the words were so extraordinarily unusual.  At the time I had no idea those lyrics would have such a profound impact in the years that lie ahead.  *  There were a couple of instances recently where I was involved with people whose jobs entailed making very detailed and precise measurements.  As I was watching them perform their work, an idea popped into my head.  Why not just do away with all the inches, feet, yards, millimeters, centimeters, and meters...and just have a few generalities.  Generalities like (a) extremely tiny, (b) tiny, (c) small, (d) medium-small, (e) medium, (f) medium-large, (g) large, (h) extra large, (i) huge and (j) super huge.  Think about how much time and energy we would all save if we just used these ten categories instead of all the precise measurements that we currently must deal with on a day-to-day basis.  The world would be so much better.  *  Just in from the Better Late Than Never Deparment:  Although it has been out for years, I was pleased as punch to discover that Absolutely Fabulous (one of the funniest television shows of all time) was released in 2013 in an all-inclusive box set.  Featuring the entire series plus plenty of bonus features, Absolutely All Of It! has been welcomed by fans with open arms (and minds).  The box is housed in a lovely pink faux iguana skin clutch bag.  If you have never seen this show, it is highly recommended viewing...particularly at a time when so many people in our world need to lighten up about so many things.  *
